The site is west of the River Cam and backs at the sout end of the historic centre of Cambridge. The brief required acommodation for approximately 100 members of the College with dining facilities, a common room and service facilities for the college grounds and buildings.

The rigorous grid of this square building arose from a study of the interrelationship between the optimum planning and daylighting of a study bedroom and the economic span of pre-cat concrete floor supported by load bearing, sound insulating brick cross walls. Its planning is a transformation of a traditional Cambridge college, where a continuous wall of student rooms, grouped around vertical staircases, encloses a court.
