The industrial ruin as a living environment
The abandoned Lisnave shipyard, once a busy industrial site, now offers a big opportunity for Lisbon’s future—just two kilometres away by ferry. As the city faces a growing housing crisis, this space is a chance for real and needed change.
The project focuses on two old warehouses, built to support shipbuilding, which now serve as the starting point for a new, self-sufficient neighbourhoods that could bring new life to the area. A modern housing complex is added between the warehouses, designed as a natural extension of their structure. Its form is a contemporary abstraction of the warehouse archetype—similar in scale and rhythm, yet reinterpreted.
The abstract shape reflects the industrial past, while colourful courtyards inside create different environments and help people navigate the place. These courtyards are based on the scale of Almada, forming welcoming shared spaces.
The warehouses are turned into shaded houses with a tropical environment, with light roofs that let in air and sun—creating a lively, balanced, and green place to live.
