The water journeys, with all their content and heritage value, have been a pending debt in the history of the city of Madrid. Until very recently, neither their existence nor their interest was taken into consideration. The metro works in Plaza Isabel II revealed this neglect with the discovery of the hidden treasures. Different organisations in the city have initiated protection and study campaigns, but there is no centre to manage the documentation and promote its study; it is currently scattered around different administrative centres in Madrid. We propose the creation of a Museum-Study Centre with sufficient and necessary entity to improve the square and its surroundings and to include everything related to Madrid’s water journeys.
The place, Plaza Isabel II. The museum must coexist with the current metro infrastructure located underneath the square, being allowed to be manipulated and redesigned to improve the functioning of the square as a whole. The project begins with an exhaustive study of the history of the site. The Plaza de Isabel II has been and continues to be an important place in the city of Madrid. Studying the history of this space reveals that it is a different scenario. This square has always been a public space, but it has not always been understood as a square. Over the centuries it has had a changing and undefined character.
