The Kahn stool by Sanna Völker is a study of the design philosophy of the 20th-century architect Louis Kahn, and a tribute to the architecture that shaped his work. It’s a journey to the ancient monuments of Egypt, Greece and Rome, expressed in a stool forged by history, craftsmanship and nature. The piece is made in Roman travertine by stonemasons who have mastered their craft for four generations, dating back to 1880. Selected from a quarry located in a small mountain village in the province of Barcelona, the used material hails from the same block of stone used to sculpt the angels of Sagrada Familia. Kahn stool is the balance between the natural-made and the man-made, the raw and the delicate, the immensely planned and the randomly occurring. A second version was crafted in walnut, as an extension of the design and to stand in contrast to the travertine.
