During the development of the project, people was looking escheptic when I told them the thematic of it, everything related with death seems to be not friendly, but their opinion changed after explaining them, that it was a challenge because for me, on this kind of building the architecture has a central role, since it creates spaces for people who particularly needs to feel comfortable.
The program consists of a memorial building, with a couple of wake rooms and a chapel, as well as services for the public and the cemetery.
The project is located on the Italian island of Sicilia, in the city of Palermo. The spot is next to the city’s cemetery, which initially was on the suburbs of the city, but nowadays is part of it. The sector is sorrounded by two main streets, which makes the area very noisy and chaotic. There is also a huge 4 floors niche building that takes a strong presence on the site also because its singular shape. This building will be included as a part of the project and will help to shape it.
The climatology of the site was really important in making decisions which support the idea of the project. In Palermo, as a mediterranean city, the day a day live is mainly developed in the streets. The street markets all arround the city are a good example of that. Therefore the entire program of the project is distributed around different courtyards that contain the various activities around the building. This courtyard concept supports the central IDEA: let the building be completely opened to itself throught the courtyards, and closed to the chaos of the city, making possible to create a intimate and private athmosphere, that the visitors deserve.
There are three big courtyards that define the project, all of them with diferent character, but all connected with each other throught a porch. One related with the bar, a second one related with the chapel, and the third connected with the acces of each wake room.
Facilities, structure and construction were also developed, and all together firm up the idea of the project. The facilities sorround the project seting the concept of being closed to the city, and that is supported by the structure, which becomes lighter in dimensions and material from the outside to the inside.
