The new apartment house for people with mental handicaps is going to occupy a lot between two buildings in the 18th century developed area of Mathäusquartier. The inhabitants will live together in family-alike structures divided in three groups with their tutors. The main idea for the design was to provide them with as much autonomy and independency as possible. The central staircase core together with the compartment walls builds the supporting structure. This particular configuration takes to a free floor plan on which each single room is located in peripherical position generating an irregular-shaped open space for the community. Twice a staircase and a lift connect the levels intern. On the main façade – which spans between the compartment walls the different coloured curtains behind the ribbon window are revealing the movements and the personality of the habitants.
