The project «MEXTLI” gets its scale from the surrounding logistics and commercial buildings. The new volume will fit into city area being unpretentious and offering an uniqueness public place. A large, dark-colored concrete base anchored the building between track and motorway. On the base is an integrated open hall conecting with Vulkanstrasse where the visitors can enter through the spacious staircase and walkway to the level of ‘City Terrace’. This open space is understood as Belvedere and expanded meaningfully to the outdoor spaces. The covered “City Terrace” is the main level of the public system, especially for visitors to the biggest ice hockey arena. Accessible by escalator to the floor where the Belvedere-open volleyball arena is located. The appearance of the large volume is divided clearly in three areas. The open-floor Belvedere is recognizable in red and envolved with a transparent screen that catch sight of the volume of the arenas, the restaurant and the business rooms. The building with its robust plinth and delicate hovering roof stand out for its elegance and character.
The ‘City Terrace’ serves as front square of the two main arenas of Volero Zurich and ZSC Lions. Only the VIP area of the ice hockey arena is accessed directly from the business areas in the north. The Business Club is oriented outwards, and has little relation with the arenas. The available space on the main level is a bit small, so they have been extended to sectors B and D on the ground floor level; this allows separate ways for the visiting and domestic fans. The stadium boasts a central location and is connected to the lobby. The compact building form and the simple frame structure and the sensible windows give a good basis for a sustainable solution. However, the stacking of three halls in the south area of the building leads to an elaborate support structure in this area. Overall, the project is into the urban scale with the local construction solution.
The expansion of public space to the ground floor and the hall on the terrace level gives a valuable contribution to the city and remark the importance of the new location.
